Sportspersons of the week ended 27th June 2009

Italy's swimmer Federica Pellegrini beat the women's 400m freestyle world record set by the British swimmer Joanne Jackson set in March by 0.25 seconds to win in 4m0.41secs at the Mediterranean Games in Pescara.

China's Olympic squad who finished top at the medals with 51 golds in Beijing have been named Laureus World team of the year. In all, China won 100 medals at the Games 10 fewer than the USA, but they gathered 15 more medals than the US, as well as 21 silver and 28 bronze medals. Other Laureus World award winners are: Usain Bolt, triple Olympic sprint champion - World sportsman of the year. Yelena Isinbayeva, pole vault Olympic gold medalist - World sportsman of the year. Rebecca Aldington, British swimmer winner of two Olympic medals - World Breakthrough of the year.

Nicole Cook added the British national road race title to her Olympic and World crown in Abergavenny. Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal has won the Indonesian Open badminton title with a victory over the higher ranked Chinese Lin Wang 12-21 21-18 21-9 in Jakarta. She is the first Indian woman to reach the singles quarter-finals at the Olympics and the first Indian to win the world junior Badminton championships.
