Paavo Nurmi FIN
Paavo Nurmi of Finland hit the headlines in 1920
Antwerp Olympics and is credited with pacing a race
by using a stop watch . By pushing carts uphill
in the mountainous terrain he lived, Nurmi was unconsciously
using modern training methods. Nurmi won nine golds
in all 10000m, cross
country (ind) and cross country (team ) in 1920
Antwerp Olympics and 1500m, 5000m, cross country
(ind), cross country (team) in 1924 Paris Olympics
and 10000m in 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, the most
by any runner in the history of the Games.
