James Brendan Connolly- USA

James Brendan Connolly as an undergraduate dropped out from University of Harvard to compete in the inaugural modern Olympic games at Athens in 1896.The American team arrived in Athens on the eve of the inauguration after an ardous journey by sea as they were unaware Greeks followed Julian calendar which differed 11 days from the Gregorian calendar. The triple jump, the first competition was held immediately after the Games were declared open. Connolly last in jumping order placed his cap a yard beyond the leading mark of 12.70m by French Alexandre Tuffere and thundered down the runway to cut the sand at 13.17m.His final jump of 13.71m made it possible to become the first Olympic champion since Armenian boxer Barasdates in AD 369 !!!
