Spiridon Louis
The thirty year old Greek shepherd Spiridon Louis won the Marathon in the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896 in front of nearly one lac people in 2hours 58minutes 50seconds.The event was a restaging of the famous run in 490 B.C. by Pheidippides bringing the news of the victory of Greek over Persians at Marathon.Apart from the trophy donated by a French delegate, the simple man asked only for a horse and cart to help his daily work of carrying water home twice running 13miles along the pony to Athens and back to his village each trip i.e. running 26 miles ,the distance of a Marathon course.
